Getting a toddler ready for a sibling.

It can be really worrying and exciting when you find out you are pregnant with your second. You know it will be a big change for your little one. But, there can be ways to slowly prepare them.

  1. Bring them to scans (where possible), they will feel included and depending on their age slowly grasp that something new is happening.

  2. Talk to them daily about the baby in mummy tummy, perhaps they can come up with a nickname for the bump.

  3. Get stories about becoming a big brother or sister and change the name of characters to their name.

  4. Get a present for them from the baby.

  5. Encourage them to talk to bump,

Once baby arrives it can be very overwhelming with new visitors, make sure you involve your toddler in when visitors come. Maybe, delay visitors if you feel happy with that and get settled as a family of four or more! You can expect some regression from your toddler, where possible spend some quality uniteruptted time with them. Even its s just for ten minutes and be a little more understanding with them. If they are potty trained there might be more accidents, they might begin acting like a baby. Allow them to feel the emotions of not being overjoyed with a new sibling. I mean if someone random came into my home and used all my things and I wasn’t getting any attention I wouldn’t want to be happy. It will take a little time to get used to but understanding and patience will help.

Thanks,
